Why your affiliate links belong on your own tracking domain
What a tracking domain is, why running links and pixels on a domain you own beats a shared host, and how a one-time set of DNS records brings it live automatically.
Every tracking link and pixel in your program is served from a web address. The question is whose. Run them on a shared platform host and you inherit that host's reputation, its cookie limits, and its branding. Run them on a domain you own, such as track.yourbrand.com, and your traffic always runs on your own brand. That single choice quietly decides how much of your data survives the modern web.
What a tracking domain is
Your tracking domain is the address that receives clicks, sets the attribution cookie, and accepts conversion pixels. It is a domain you own, so your links look like your links and your cookies are first-party. Why your own domain matters
Browser privacy protections. Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention, and similar features in other browsers, sharply limit cookies set by third-party domains. When your tracking host is first-party to the visitor's journey, the attribution cookie is far more likely to survive the days or weeks between a click and the conversion it produces. That is the difference between an attributed sale and an unattributed one.
Trust and deliverability. A track.yourbrand.com link looks legitimate to users, to email filters, and to ad platforms. A generic shared tracker does not, and it drags your deliverability down with everyone else who shares it.
Continuity. Your links live on a domain you control, so you are never hostage to a host you do not.
Setup is a single visit to your DNS provider
Standing up a tracking domain is deliberately a one-time task. You add the records the platform generates for you, and the domain then verifies itself, gets its HTTPS certificate, and goes live on its own, usually within a few minutes. You never have to come back for a second set of records.
For a typical subdomain like track.yourbrand.com, you add three records, each labeled with what it does:
- A traffic-routing record that sends clicks on your domain to the tracking servers. It is normal for this one not to resolve until setup finishes.
- An HTTPS certificate record that lets the platform issue and automatically renew your SSL certificate. Keep this one permanently; removing it later would break HTTPS when the certificate renews.
- An ownership-proof record that confirms you control the domain.
If you would rather delegate a whole domain, a root domain works too; it uses nameserver records at your registrar instead, and the platform then creates everything else inside that zone for you.
What happens next
Nothing, on your side. The platform re-checks your DNS every few minutes and takes each step automatically: confirm ownership, issue the certificate, connect the domain, then switch it on. The status simply moves from "waiting for your DNS records" to "setting up" to "active." Once it is active, your first domain becomes the default for new links and pixels.
Swapping or replacing a domain
To move to a new domain with no downtime, you swap it: the replacement goes through the same automatic setup while the old one keeps serving, and the old one is retired only once the new one is live. Nobody's existing links break in the process.
Most setup issues come down to a record that does not quite match, usually a trailing dot, a missing prefix, or a value pasted into the wrong field, and they are quick to correct against your DNS provider.
