Affiliate Network vs Platform

An affiliate network is a marketplace that connects advertisers with affiliates and takes a cut of the volume it intermediates. An affiliate platform (or SaaS tracking software) is technology you run yourself to operate your own program, keeping the relationships and the margin.

An affiliate network and an affiliate platform solve overlapping problems in opposite ways. A network is a marketplace: it brings advertisers and affiliates together, handles discovery and payments, and takes a percentage of the volume flowing through it. A platform (affiliate tracking software, usually SaaS) is technology you operate to run your own program — you own the advertiser and affiliate relationships, the tracking domain, the data, and the margin the network would otherwise take.

The core trade-off

  • Network. Fast access to a pool of partners and advertisers, less setup, but you rent the relationship, pay an override on every conversion, and don't fully control the data or the attribution logic.
  • Platform. You bring your own partners (or recruit them), do more of the operating yourself, but keep 100% of the margin, own your first-party data, and control tracking end to end.

Many companies use both: a network to source new partners, and a platform to run the direct relationships they've earned — because paying a network override on a partner you already have is pure leakage.

A worked example

You have 20 affiliates you recruited directly. On a network charging a 20% override, a month with $50,000 in affiliate-driven revenue costs you $10,000 in network fees on top of payouts — for relationships you brought yourself. Move those partners onto your own platform and that $10,000 stays with you, minus a flat software cost. The more direct relationships you have, the more a platform wins; the more you rely on the network's marketplace to find partners, the more its cut is worth paying.

When each makes sense

Choose a network when you need reach and partners you don't have. Choose a platform when you have (or can recruit) direct relationships and want to own the economics, the data, and the tracking. The decision isn't permanent — programs commonly graduate from network-only to running their best partners in-house.

How this works in LimeliJourney

LimeliJourney is an affiliate platform: you run your own program, manage your own advertisers, creatives, and payouts, and keep the margin. Managing that program is what the partners surface is for — recruit affiliates, approve them, set contracts, and give each a portal to grab links and see performance. Because every account runs on its own tracking domain with first-party attribution, the data is yours, not a network's. Migrating from a network or another platform is supported: legacy CAKE-style parameters and pixels are accepted so links keep working during the move.
